In Scope Splashes Home A 'Star' At Churchill Downs

Second-time starter In Scope (Gun Runner), third behind the eye-popping 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Mashallah (Maxfield) with a 90 Beyer Speed Figure at Keeneland Apr. 23, went two better Friday over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs to earn the moniker herself.

Drawn wide in a deep field, the 2-1 favorite kept her face clear in this stretch out from six furlongs to one mile, racing prominently several paths off the rail under Axel Concepcion. Poised just off the flank of leader Aegis (Essential Quality), In Scope had plenty of response when asked to get after that rival just outside of the furlong marker.

Finding the slop just to her liking, the favorite splashed home a geared-down winner 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Bodacious Bay (Not This Time) and Fast Gun (Gun Runner) who dueled for the minor placings in a final time of 1:36.55.

“We have liked this filly since day one,” winning trainer George “Rusty” Arnold told the TDN after the race. “She kept having little issues that kept her from running. Hopefully they are behind her because we think she has a really bright future.”

The 23rd 'TDN Rising Star' for Three Chimneys heavyweight Gun Runner, In Scope is out of a graded stakes-placed English Channel first dam who has three winners from as many to race including $1.15-million yearling Theismann (Quality Road). The mare herself is a half to MGSW/MGISP Authenticity (Quiet American) who went on to produce MGISW and successful young sire Charlatan (Speightstown).

In Scope, who sold for $335,000 to G. Watts Humphrey Jr. as a yearling at Keeneland September in 2024, has a yearling half-brother by leading general sire Into Mischief and a foal half-sister by Nyquist.
